This special limited edition release is in a run of 100 copies, modeled around the classic printed disco vinyl sleeve. It includes printed front and rear sleeves with a circular cut out to show the disc artwork as well as a marble printed vinyl-effect disc. The cover photography is by the artist and the art/design was created by Andrew Heath.
‘Waiting For Something To Break’ is a collection of deep and swirling ambient pieces, created using synthesisers, found sounds and sampled cello. Phil wanted to continue working with Wavetable Synthesis as he had done in his last album for Whitelabrecs ‘Edge Of Imagination’. However, the work that came about was different, with a more atmospheric and emotional sound emerging as his subconscious took over in the creative process.
I’m in one of my quiet periods release wise, which means there is new music being made and projects at various stages of organisation. There will be at least one album coming out this year along with various other bits and pieces in different states of completion. There are also more art project/live performances in current discussion. As usual, it’s all in progress. You can check out my instagram here where I post fairly regularly.
I’ve once again worked with Aaron Martin but this album is much more freeform than 2020s The Sound Of Someone Leaving- which was very direct emotionally. I asked Aaron to be as free and experimental with his playing as he wanted and the results are wilder and more elusive, weaving in and out of focus. Aaron’s cello is blended with layers of looped accordion, synths and seascapes recorded in my new home on the South East Coast of England- a place that is bright, breezy and where giant seagulls roam the sea front like packs of wild dogs. One of the main influences on the music is Virginia Woolf’s novel ‘To The Lighthouse’ and I wanted to capture a musical version of her ‘internal narrative stream of consciousness’. The album also has elements of spoken word embedded in the layers of sound, text I wrote myself and read by actor Lizzie McPhee.
The title- At Sea- refers as much to the psychological state of ‘not being on stable ground’ as it does to the all consuming environment within which the music is set.
Here are some Soundcloud previews and a link to the pre-order page
An Imperfect Account of a Comet is an audiovisual installation by @_lyndalaird celebrating the celestial discoveries of the 18th century astronomer Caroline Herschel.
Myself and Sound Recordist @annieneedham created the soundtrack for the installation entitled 8 Comets based on Herschel’s discovery of comets
The Installation has been shown in sites across the UK and on 28th & 29th October will come together when the full installation of 560 Star Plates will be shown alongside a live performance of 8 Comets.
My latest album as ‘Edge of Imagination’ is available now from Whitelabrecs.
‘The Edge of Imagination’ is the latest record under The Inventors of Aircraft pseudonym which builds on lush synths and intelligent melodies. The album is an exploration of the space between virtual and the real, the conscious and sub-conscious and somewhere in between reality and a dream. It plays through as a journey, initiated by the opening track ‘Gateway’, which takes the listener in before the subsequent tracks delve deeper and deeper into a cybernetic dreamworld.
There are moments of intensity and near-chaos, mysterious exploratory caves and dreamy passages of retro-futurism. We won’t spoil the order of these events in this release text, but the title of the penultimate track is ‘Rescued’, a triumphant piece which precedes ‘Home’. The closing moments of this final piece may well find you back home in the reality of planet earth, as this otherworldly experience closes.
The new Inventors of Aircraft album ‘Edge of Imagination’ is up for pre -order at Whitelabrecs

There are a couple of projects in the works. An Inventors of Aircraft album that should see a release in the first half of this year. This will be followed by another currently un-named album, which is currently in production. There are also a couple of other projects happening- most of which began pre-covid and hopefully will see completion this year.
The best way to keep up to date with my work is to follow my two bandcamp pages
I have a couple of projects that are going on and mostly happening through my Instagram channel. The first is ‘Marchloops’ a project I ran through March with a new sound sketch everyday and at the end I put an album together HERE
Another is a collaboration with designer Alexander Bueken who’s made some generative art videos that’ve added music too. This can all be seen on my Instagram channel and i’m hoping will also turn into a new album. Have a look (and listen)
There will be a new release in a couple of months- more info on that soon. It’s worth signing up to my Instagram channel as that seems to be were the latest things are happening- it just seems an easy place to add news etc.
Things are happening and projects are being organised for this year. Maybe one of the best ways to keep up to date is to follow my Instagram page, which seems to be the social platform if find nicest to use.
From September to November it's going to be three albums in three months from me. Thanks to Covid 19 my releases for the year had been delayed but are now being released one after the other before the year ends. So, there is-
Last Things- new double album on Wist Rec, released on October 19th. You can buy from my Bandcamp shop and the label. Again, this is a limited edition run.
There are a few remaining copies of the limited edition CD of The Sound of Someone Leaving left and available from my bandcamp page here
There is also a new album coming at the end of October. "Last Things" is a multi- disc epic partly inspired by the novella “In The Country of Last Things’ by Paul Auster and recorded by myself and The Inventors of Aircraft. It’s being released by Wist Rec on October 19th and pre orders are up now. You can find all the details you need here.
The Sound of Someone Leaving has sold out at Fluid Audio. I have a few remaining copies of the bespoke packaged limited edition to sell from my Bandcamp page.
Thankyou to everyone who supported the album and all the messages, posts and tweets. Very much appreciated.
This album has been a long time in the works and I’m very proud of it. It features Aaron Martin with some wonderful contributions on cello, is mastered by Ian Hawgood and is being released by Fluid Audio- so expect the album artwork to be amazing. Release date to follow…
A new four track EP is out on Hibernate and part of the label’s #TwoPointSixChallenge. More info below-
Charitable fundraising has been hit very hard by the COVID-19 so as part of #TwoPointSixChallenge we plan to release 26 free download/pay as much as you can afford Ep or albums on our Bandcamp page over the coming weeks. 100% income being donated to charities. All proceeds from this EP go to Unicef
After the fun of the Twenty Third of The Third album this one’s much more serene and very ambient. It’s inspired by the South coast of England- a grey/blue strip of sea and sky starting around Brighton and continuing East (obviously it goes West is as well, but this is the bit I know.) I couldn’t visit it during lockdown so I created a sonic version. I’m also loving the cover designs for this series- well worth checking all the releases over on the label’s bandcamp.
Released today- an new album by The Inventors of Aircraft as part of Whitelabrecs digital series Home Diaries. An international line-up of artists, with the music created during lockdown and social distancing conditions.
The album can be downloaded from the label’s bandcamp page here
There are a couple of Inventors of Aircraft releases imminent- an ep and an album- both to be released digitally for now. I’ll post more once the labels themselves have announced a release date. And then there are the currently delayed CD albums which i’m hoping will see a release at some point, but it’s hard to say at the moment, there are signs that shipping CD’s is going to get a bit easier and the release schedule can get back on track. To be honest I’d rather just wait until it’s safer for everyone.
Meanwhile I’ve updated the Bandcamp pages and added releases to Spotify and other streaming sites.
